Checking in and out

  • Do I always have to check in and out?

Yes, just like using an OV-chipkaart, you always have to check in and out.

If you forget to check out, you will be charged € 4.00. This is generally more expensive than the ticket price.

  • Can I use every chip- or credit card for checking in and out?

Most Dutch banks are supported by OVpay. Please make sure contactless payment is activated. You do not need to register anywhere to use OVpay, but ensure you have enough balance in your account or credit available on your credit card.

Tip: Always take your card out of your wallet when you are checking in or out.

You can check in and out with:

    • A contactless chip card from ABN AMRO, ASN Bank, bunq, ING, Rabobank, RegioBank or SNS
    • A contactless credit card from Mastercard or Visa (e.g. published by ICS).
    • A contactless debit- or creditcard from Maestro, V PAY, Mastercard or Visa.
    • A smart phone* linked to your bank account. And it also works with Apple Pay and Google Wallet.

    * Do you own a wearable which is linked to your bank account? You can always try to use this for checking in and out. We can not guarantee this works because of the technical capabilities of our card readers.

  • Can I travel with the bank card on my mobile phone?

Yes, you can. Please bear in mind that the card on your smart phone is seen as a different one from your plastic card.

Always check in and out with the same card to avoid unnecessary costs.

  • Do I have to take my contactless chip- or credit card out of my wallet or its holder when checking in and out?

Yes. Make sure you only hold the card you want to check in and out with up against the card reader, not your whole wallet. This lets you check in and out with the payment method you choose. It avoids too much money being deducted from your account.

  • Can you travel with multiple people on one contactless chip- or credit card?

No, just like the OV-chipkaart, this isn’t possible.

When you check in and out with your chip card, you travel as one person at full price. This is the same price as when you travel with the OV-chipkaart.

If you travel with several people, everyone must check in and out for themselves with their own chip card/credit card/smart phone or buy separate tickets. The different cards may all be linked to the same bank account.

If you’re travelling with children aged up to 13, separate child’s tickets are cheaper.

Tip: You can easily buy separate tickets via the HTM ticket app.

  • Why do I have to use the same card for checking in and out?

Every way of payment (OV-chipkaart, bankcard, creditcard and payment on mobile phone) is seen as a unic payment device. This also happens when the cards are coming from the same bankaccount. When you scan different 'cards' for checking in and out, this is seen as two seperate trips. So always use the same card.

  • I've forgotten to check in or out. What can I do?

It happens to the best of us! You can adjust missed check-ins or -outs yourself on this page. Please note: you can only do so 5 days after your trip. You have a total of 60 days to adjust any missed check-ins or -outs.

Good to know: we issue refunds within 15 days. We also debit any unpaid faires within 15 days.

  • Why does the card reader say 'Geaccepteerd' when I check in/out?

Our card readers have a learning curve, when it comes to OVpay, so sometimes they will say 'Geaccepteerd' when you scan your card. Do not worry, this is a valid check in/out.

  • Why was my debit or credit card declined?

Sorry about that! There are several reasons why this might happen:

    • You have insufficient funds
    • Your debit card is not issued by ABN AMRO, ASN Bank, bunq, ING, Knab, Rabobank, RegioBank or SNS
    • Your debit or credit card is blocked for public transport due to an outstanding balance
    • Contactless payments is switched off
    • OVpay is experiencing technical difficulties

Payment

  • How is my journey paid for?

Your journey is paid for by the bank that is linked to your chip- or credit card. You will see the costs of today's journey as a single amount on your bank statement the next day.

  • How much does my trip with OVpay cost?

Travelling with OVpay is the same price as travelling with OV-chipkaart full price.

  • Where can I see my travel overview?

Use the OVpay App or go to the OVpay website.

  • What do I need to do if the wrong amount has been deducted from my account?

You can request a correction via this form. If this doesn't work, please contact our Customer Service or go to one of our service points.

  • Why is my journey more expensive when I travel with OVpay, instead of OV-chipcard?

When you travel with OVpay, you pay the same price as when you travel with OV-chipcard full charge. Products like age discounts or subscriptions do not work on OVpay yet, so you will be charged full price.

We are working hard to make travelling with a product available on OVpay. We expect this to be functionally at the end of this year.

Until then, if you use a travelling product like age discount or a subscription, keep using your OV-chipcard.

  • What happens if I don't have enough balance in my bank account?

You can just check in and out with your chip card. The charging for your journey is processed overnight. If it turns out your balance is insufficient, your card will be blocked for checking in and out on public transport.

We will then try again several times to deduct the sum due from your account.  Once this has succeeded, you can again check in and out with your contactless chip- or credit card.

Of course, you can just continue to use your OV-chipkaart or buy a ticket.

  • My contactless chip or credit card has been blocked for checking in and out due to an insufficient balance. Can I transfer the amount due to OVpay?

No, you can't transfer the amount due directly to us. There are two ways to ensure that you can again check in and out with your chip card/credit card.

    • Do you want to travel immediately? Make sure the balance on your account is sufficient. Just hold your card up against the card reader in the tram or bus. The amount owing for your unpaid journey will be deducted. You can then check in again with your chip card after no longer than 15 minutes.
    • Not intending to go by tram or bus right away? Make sure in the coming days that the balance on your account is sufficient. Depending on your bank, we will try several times to deduct the sum due from your account.
  • How big a balance needs to be in my account?

Ensure you have sufficient balance to pay for all the journeys for one day.
The journeys will be deducted from your account the next day all in one go. If the deduction fails, because there is too little balance in your account, your contactless chip- or credit card will be blocked for checking in and out on public transport.

We will then try again several times to deduct the sum due from your account. It's different for each bank how long it takes before a new attempt is made.

Once this has succeeded, you can check in and out with your contactless chip- or credit card again. If the deduction of the sum due fails, then travel with your OV-chipkaart, or buy a ticket.

  • Can my partner and I both use our own chip cards from our joint bank account?

Yes, you can. It works the same way if you were both paying by chip and pin in a shop or bar. If you both travel and check in with your own chip card, you will see a deduction for both journeys from your joint account.
